First Steps After a Ski Accident in Austria

Why the first hours are crucial

After a ski accident, every minute counts. Securing evidence and taking the right steps can later make the difference between successfully enforcing your compensation claim — or not. We support you from the very beginning, even if you are a tourist and live abroad.

The very first step is, of course, to secure the accident scene, provide first aid, and call for help. Safety and health always come first. Once everyone involved has been taken care of, the following measures will greatly help you pursue compensation later on.

1. Document the accident and the scene

To claim compensation, you must be able to prove how and why the accident happened.

  • Call the police and have the incident officially recorded.
The police report is an important piece of evidence in later proceedings.

  • Document the surroundings and positions. For example:

    • Where exactly did the accident occur?

    • Who was coming from where?

    • Who was standing or skiing where, and when?

  • Take photos and videos of the accident scene, the slope, and any obstacles from as many angles as possible.

  • Record weather and visibility conditions.

  • Write down your memories and those of witnesses as soon as possible — for instance as a short written note or a voice memo.

In short: document everything as thoroughly as you can so that the course of events can later be proven clearly, if necessary in court. The more information you secure, the easier it will be to enforce your claim.

2. Collect the details of the other party and witnesses

Make sure to note the names and contact details of any witnesses and the other skier involved. This includes:

  • name, address, telephone number

  • insurance details (liability policy)

  • ski school or resort operator details, if involved

Important: Take a photo of the other party’s ID documents. If they do not have ID with them, call the police so their identity can be formally established.

3. Seek medical treatment and insist on documentation

  • See a doctor or go to a hospital immediately.

  • Have all injuries documented in writing.

  • Keep all invoices, medical reports, and certificates in a safe place.

4. Inform your insurance and contact a lawyer

  • Report the accident to your insurance as soon as possible.

  • Contact an Austrian lawyer experienced in ski accidents to assess your claims.

Avoid common mistakes

  • not recording any details

  • not reporting the accident

  • delaying medical treatment

  • failing to secure reports or witness statements

  • accepting a quick insurance settlement without legal advice
